Caterpillar Uses “Value-Stream” Manufacturing to Meet 993K Demand

When Caterpillar introduced the 993K wheel loader in March 2008, mine and quarry operators immediately recognized the machine’s capabilities and placed orders exceeding the company’s expectations. But this good news for Caterpillar was soon tempered by the strain placed on the company’s large-wheel-loader assembly line by adding the 993. Then came the economic downturn, an unwelcome development for all manufacturers, but Caterpillar saw the temporary decline in 993 sales as an opportunity to address the manufacturing situation. In only seven months, the company created not just a dedicated assembly line for the 993 at its Aurora, IL, plant, but an entirely new, integrated production system, a “value stream,” that has become the model for all future assembly-line overhauls.

BAUMA 2010: Action-filled presentations on all aspects of safety on working platforms

The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF), a ‘not-for-profit’ member organisation, promotes the safe and effective use of elevating work platforms and presents its range of products at bauma from 19 to 25 April 2010. The IPAF safety area on the open-air exhibition area, supported by the organizers of bauma, shows how to select the right machinery and use it correctly. Action-filled presentations will also take place daily.

United Rentals Acquires Industrial Rental Company in Ohio

Wirtgen Group – New subsidiary opens in Ankara

True to its pledge „Close to our customers“, the Wirtgen Group has moved a little closer to its customers in Turkey, too. Since early 2008, a team of 28 sales and service specialists has been based in new premises in the country. During the Komatek exhibition in Ankara, the second most important local trade fair after Ankomak in Istanbul, the Wirtgen Group invited its customers to the official inauguration ceremony in Gölbasi on 6 May.

United Rentals buys Ohio-based industrial rental company

United Rentals has acquired Leasco Equipment Services, a Marietta, Ohio-based rental company that serves the industrial sector with a focus on power generation, petroleum, chemical, and pulp and paper companies.  The price of the acquisition was undisclosed. Leasco operates from a single location, and its fleet is oriented to its industrial customer base, including welding and cutting equipment, fork lifts, industrial cranes, compressors, aerial platforms and hoisting/rigging equipment.  Read the rest of this entry »
